James Michael Curley is inaugurated governor.

January 3, 1935

Minutes before being sworn in at the State House, Curley reputedly throws a punch at his predecessor, Joseph Ely. An estimated 14,000 people attend Curley’s inaugural party that evening to celebrate, according to Francis Russell, “Boston had taken over Massachusetts at last. The crowd from the City Hall moved up Beacon Hill to the State House.”
